Flying with a power wheelchair from Canada

Manual wheelchairs are usually gate-checked as mobility aids. Power chairs are a battery question wearing a chair’s clothes.

Pride describes some Jazzy Carbon batteries, including the Carbon 27’s standard 12 Ah pack, as airline-compliant, and tells you to confirm with the airline. That second sentence is the one that matters. A larger accessory battery can add range and can also be the reason a carrier says no. Watt-hours, not the marketing word “lithium,” are what the rule is written around.

Before a trip, confirm three things with the paperwork in front of you: the exact battery on your quote, the airline’s current wheelchair and battery policy, and the folded size against that airline’s gate-check limit. Do this more than a day before the flight. Policies are not identical across Air Canada, WestJet, and a regional carrier.

A rehab base such as a Permobil or an Alltrack is not a folding Carbon. Those chairs fly as cargo mobility devices under a different procedure, often upright, with battery terminals protected the way the airline requires. Do not assume a travel-chair anecdote applies to them.
